HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's cross country team earned a sweep of the Northeast Conference Weekly awards as senior Becca White (Natick, Mass.) claimed the NEC Athlete of the Week while freshman Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, N.J.) collected the NEC Rookie of the Week honors. The announcement was made by the league office on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The Bobcats sweep the weekly awards for the first time since Oct. 12, 2010 when White was the top athlete and Amanda Faust (Macungie, Pa.) was best among the freshmen.
For White, the five-time NEC Rookie of the Week in her freshman campaign, it is her eighth career NEC Athlete of the Week honor. Running in her final home meet on Senior Day, she earns her eighth award after winning the Quinnipiac Invitational on Saturday with a dominating time of 18:11.1. The three-time winner of the Quinnipiac Invitational, White finished more than 27 seconds faster than the 2nd place finisher. It was also her fastest time at a 5k event since the 2011 New England Cross Country Championships where she crossed the line in 18:04. This is also her second consecutive top-five finish in an event this season as she is coming off a 3rd place showing at the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Race hosted by Bryant University.
Campbell wins the NEC Rookie of the Week award in just her second collegiate race. She joins fellow teammate Ashley Carle (Jackson, N.J.), who previously won the Rookie of the Week for her 9th place finish at the Stony Brook Invitational, to give the Bobcats two different winners in a season for the first time since 2006 when Lindsey Pierret won the award once and Kristen Stevens was a three-time winner. Campbell finished the Quinnipiac Invitational in 6th place, just behind several established Bobcat runners including juniors Jessica Soja (Simsbury, Conn.), Amanda and Brianna Faust (Macungie, Pa.). Her time of 19:21.2 gave her the first top-10 finish of her career and she was also the fastest NEC freshman in the event.
Quinnipiac will have their first weekend off of the season before heading to the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational on Friday Sep. 28 where the women's event will begin at 10 a.m. and the men's at 12 p.m.
