Women's Cross Country Race to Quinnipiac Invitational Victory Over CCSU, Becca White Wins Event For Third Time
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's cross country team put on an incredible display on Senior day, winning the Quinnipiac Invitational over Central Conn. St. on Saturday. Running in her final home meet, senior Becca White (Natick, Mass.) dominated the field, winning her third career Quinnipiac Invitational with a time of 18:11.1. White received plenty of help with the Bobcats taking seven of the top eight finishers as they finished with 19 points and their NEC counterpart Blue Devils posted 44.
"On the women's side we really were focused on packing them up as much as we could today," Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin said. "The front group was told to stay in a pack the first two miles and they executed the plan perfectly. The rest of the girls did a great job racing and we are really excited to see where the group goes for races still left on the schedule."
White, coming off a 3rd place finish at the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Race at Bryant University, posted another impressive results as she finished a little more than 27 seconds faster than the next closest runner. After winning the Quinnipiac Invitational in her freshman (17:58) and sophomore year (18:13), she took first place again and with her fastest time in an event since the 2011 New England Cross Country Championships where she ran the 5k in 18:04.
The Bobcats continued their dominance with a pack of four runners that finished within 30 seconds of one another. Juniors Jessica Soja (Simsbury, Conn.) finished in 18:52.3, Amanda Faust (Macungie, Pa.) crossed the line at 19:01.6, and Brianna Faust (Macungie, Pa.) had 19:10.1 to combine with freshman Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, N.J.) at 19:21.2 to take the 3rd through 6th place finishes. A week after placing 13th at the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Race, Soja's continues her breakout season with a career-best 3rd place finish. Sisters Amanda and Brianna Faust both placed in the top-five for the first time in their careers and Campbell's first collegiate put her just out of the top-five in 6th place.
Other seniors competing in their last home races include the 7th place finisher Rachel Morelli (Philadelphia, Pa.) who had a personal-best 19:45.4. Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.), competing in her first race of the 2012 season, had a time of 20:10.3 and Hannah Donadio (Killingworth, Conn.) finished just behind her at 20:16.4. Kate Hammerton (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) also competed in her last home meet and crossed the line at 21:21.5.
Quinnipiac will have a week off before taking part in the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational on Saturday Sep. 28 with the women starting at 10:00 a.m.
