White Leads Women's Cross Country To Ninth Place Finish At New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – The Quinnipiac women’s cross country team placed ninth in the varsity race and eighth in the sub varsity meet at the New England (NEICAAA) Championships on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Franklin Park in Boston Mass. Thirty-nine teams competed in the women’s varsity race, where Boston College won with 38 points, while Quinnipiac finished with a total of 279 points. Junior Becca White (Natick, Mass) paced the Bobcats with a ninth place finish in 18:04.

Following White in the varsity race, was sophomore Brianna Faust (Macungie, Pa.), who finished in 43rd place in 18:47. Sophomore Amanda Faust (Macungie, Pa.) placed 50th in 18:54, while junior Andrea Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn.) and senior Julie Lanning (Victor, N.Y.) were the fourth and fifth Quinnipiac runners to finish, respectively. Szarkowicz crossed the finish line in the 61st slot overall in 19:03, followed by Lanning in 19:51.

“The women ran very well today,” said assistant coach Christopher Dickerson. “It was a great tune up for our conference meet. Our lead runner, Becca White, did a wonderful job up front and there was a great pack of women behind her.”

The Bobcats also had several runners compete in the 5k sub varsity course where Quinnipiac placed eighth with 220 points. Sophomore Jessica Soja (Simsbury, Conn.) was Quinnipiac’s top runner with a 15th place finish in 19:23, followed by Jill Humphreys (Burlington, Mass.) in 28th place with a time of 19:37. Senior Martha Santandreu (Hamburg, N.Y.) finished next in the 40th position in 19:47, while sophomore Kelley Malloy (Sewell, N.J.) placed 64th in 20:20 and senior Katie Beam (South Windsor, Conn.) finished in 73rd at 20:27.

“We’re very positive about the championship part of our season, which is in the next few weeks, based on today’s performances,” said Dickerson.

The Bobcats return to action when they compete at the Central Connecticut State Mini Meet on Oct. 21 at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, Conn.
