NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women’s cross country team placed second out of six teams at the Central Connecticut State Mini Meet on Friday afternoon. The Bobcats compiled 49 points for the second place finish, while Providence College won the 3k with 37 points overall. Quinnipiac’s five graduating seniors were honored after the meet.
“I think today was a perfect tune up for our upcoming conference meet,” said head coach Carolyn Martin. “I’m confident that the girls are feeling good for next week."
Senior Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.J.), Quinnipiac’s top-finisher, placed fourth overall in 10:21, while junior Andrea Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn.) finished eighth with a time of 10:38. Placing 10th in 10:43 was sophomore Jessica Soja (Simsbury, Conn.), followed by senior Kaitie Kelly (Weymouth, Mass.) in 13th place at 10:50.
Finishing fifth for Quinnipiac and 14th overall was senior Julie Lanning (Victor, N.Y.), who crossed the finish line in 10:51. Sophomore Christina Faust (Macungie, Pa.) placed 17th with a time of 10:54, while junior Jill Humphreys (Burlington, Mass.) rounded the top-seven runners in 18th place at 10:54.
The Bobcats also honored its five graduating seniors, including Katie Beam (South Windsor, Conn.), Julie Lanning (Victor, N.Y.), Kaitie Kelly (Weymouth, Mass.), senior captain Martha Santandreu (Hamburg, N.Y.) and graduate student Kelly Sorrell (Lebanon, Conn.).
“The senior day ceremony went really well,” said Martin, “It was a bittersweet day as we honored five seniors who have done a great job for the program in the past four years. I’m sure they’ll finish their careers on a high note in the upcoming weeks.”
Quinnipiac returns to action when they look to win their seventh consecutive Northeast Conference title next weekend. The Bobcats will run at the 2011 NEC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Monmouth University. The women’s race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at Holmdel Park in Holmdel, N.J.
