BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac women’s cross country team placed 20th out of 36 teams at the 2011 NCAA Division I Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats received 631 points overall, while Syracuse won the regional meet with a combined 116 points. Junior Andrea Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn.) paced Quinnipiac as she placed 109th with a time of 23:08.2.

“Today was disappointing as we had a goal to finish higher than we did last year,” said head coach Carolyn Martin, “but it definitely was a competitive region.”

Senior Morgan Roche finished second for the Bobcats and 112th overall in 23:11.4, followed by freshmen Amanda Faust (Macungie, Pa.), who placed 123rd in 23:21. Freshman Brianna Faust (Macungie, Pa.) and junior Becca White (Natick, Mass.) finished the 6k course in back-to-back times of 23:38.3 and 23.38.8, respectively. Senior Julie Lanning (Victor, N.Y.) and sophomore Jessica Soja (Simsbury, Conn.) rounded out Quinnipiac’s seven runners as they placed consecutively in 23:53.9 and 23:55, respectively.

“Despite a few setbacks, the women did a great job packing up and moving forward together, but I would have liked to see that pack move up in numbers,” said Martin. “The team is learning to race better as a unit and we have our top-five runners coming back next year, so I’m looking forward to watching us continue to get better.”
