BOSTON, Mass. - The Quinnipiac University women's cross country team placed fifth in both the varsity and sub varsity meets at the 98th New England Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 9, in Franklin Park, Boston, Mass. Becca White (Natick, Mass) and Kristen Stevens (Succasunna, N.J) were both named Top 25 All-New England. Boston College won in both of the women's 5k races.
White, a sophomore led the Bobcats and set a personal record with a time of 17:54, finishing in eighth place overall. Coming in second for Quinnipiac was Stevens, a graduate student, who crossed the line in 23rd place with a time of 18:17. Coming in at 18:50 and 18:53 were Amanda and Brianna Faust (Macungie, Pa.), respectively. The fifth runner to finish for Quinnipiac was Jessica Soja (Simsbury, Conn.) with a time of 18:55.
The Bobcats were led by Andrea Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn.) in the Sub Varsity Race. The sophomore finished in 14th place overall with a time of 19:14. Katie Kelly (Weymouth, Mass.) finished in 25th place with a time of 19:27. Crossing the finish line next for Quinnipiac was Kelly Newcomb (Toms River, N.J) in 29:34, good for a 33rd place finish. Finishing next was Christina Faust (Macungie, Pa.) with a time of 19:44. Close behind Faust was Paige Pallotto (Westbrook, Conn), finishing in 19:46.
"I was really pleased with the women's performance today," said Quinnipiac Head Coach Carolyn Martin. "They worked great together as a team and we made solid improvements from last week. I certainly think we'll continue to run faster and improve as the season continues."
Quinnipiac travels to New Britain, Conn. for the Central Connecticut State University Mini-Meet held at Stanley Quarter Park on Friday, Oct. 22. The women are scheduled to race at 3:30 p.m.
