HAMDEN, Conn. - Freshman Becca White (Natick, Mass.) of the Quinnipiac University women's cross country team was named the Road Runner Sports Northeast Conference Athlete and Rookie of the Week. This marks the second time this season that White has been recognized by the NEC after being named the league's top rookie following her first race at Stony Brook on Sept. 5. White earned the weekly accolades after finishing the Quinnipiac University Invitational first overall on Saturday with a time of 17:58. Her finish helped secure the team victory for the Bobcats with 19 total points.
"I am thrilled that we have a freshman as confident as Becca (White)," said head coach Carolyn Martin. "I am positive that's she will have a good year and I have a lot of confidence in her ability continue to have strong performances."
White was the first of 110 runners to cross the finish line of the 5K Quinnipiac Cross Country Course in a field of 11 teams, including 10 from the NEC. She was the only athlete to post a sub 18-minute time in the race, finishing ahead of sophomore teammate Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) in second at 18:06.
This is the second consecutive week that a member of the Bobcats has been named the NEC's top runner as Roche was honored last week.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, Oct. 2 at Lehigh's Paul Short Invitational. The race is set to begin at 11 a.m.
