HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and freshman Becca White (Natick, Mass.) of the Quinnipiac University women's cross country team were honored by the Northeast Conference with weekly accolades for their performances at the Central Connecticut State University Mini Meet on Saturday in New Britain, Conn. Roche was named the Road Runner Sports NEC Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, while White was honored as the Road Runner Sports NEC Rookie of the Week for the fifth time. Their first- and second-place showings at CCSU helped the Bobcats to their second first-place team finish of 2009 with 32 points.
"These two women worked together as a team this weekend," said head coach Carolyn Martin. "Both Morgan (Roche) and Becca (White) have learned to use each other's strengths in a race to their own advantage."
Roche was the second runner to cross the line, but was the first to score a point for her team as the top official runner. Roche crossed the line in 10:22.14, earning the first official spot and the one point for her team. That was her best placement this season, eclipsing a second-place finish at the Quinnipiac University Invitational on Sept. 19
White crossed the line less than a quarter of a second behind Roche for the second-overall scoring placement in 10:22.28. She has now finished in the top two spots for the Bobcats in each race she has been a part of in her first season with the team. Along with her five Rookie of the Week accolades, White has also been named the NEC's top runner on two separate occasions this season.
Quinnipiac will look for its fifth consecutive league title on Saturday when it hosts the 2009 NEC Cross Country Championships. The conference meet will take place on the 5K Quinnipiac Cross Country Course and is set to begin at noon.
