Women's Cross Country Wins CCSU Mini Meet
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University women's cross country finished first in a field of 11 teams at the Central Connecticut State University Mini Meet at Stanley Quarter Park Saturday morning. Sophomore Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and freshman Becca White (Natick, Mass.) finished first and second in the scoring, respectively. The Bobcats finished the meet with 32 points, 10 ahead of second-place Brown's 42-point performance.
"I felt like the girls ran together as a team today," said head coach Carolyn Martin. "This was a great tune-up for us heading into the Northeast Conference Championships next week. This was a short, fast course and will help prepare us for the next race."
Providence's Mary Kate Champagne was the first overall runner to finish the 3K course, but because the Friars did not have enough runners to score a whole team, her finish did not receive a point. Roche finished as the top Quinnipiac runner in second place with a time of 10:22.14. That time, however, earned her the one-team point given to the top eligible runner. White followed immediately behind Roche in 10:22.28.
A trio of Quinnipiac runners crossed the line in consecutive places. Senior Lindsey Pierret (Morristown, N.J.), and sophomores Katie Beam (South Windsor, Conn.) and Julie Lanning (Victor, N.Y.) finished 11th, 12th, and 13th in scoring, respectively. Pierret crossed the line in 10:39.59, while Beam and Lanning posted times of 10:40.55 and 10:41.99.
The Bobcats return to action next week when they host the 2009 Northeast Conference Championships in Hamden. The women will run on the 5K Quinnipiac Cross Country Course with the race scheduled to begin at noon.
