A new era begun in 2012 as first-year women’s volleyball head coach Kristopher Czaplinski’s announced the signing of assistant coach Lynsey Somers. She will assist Czaplinski in all aspects of the program and brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience with her to Quinnipiac.
In addition to coaching, Somers has been working as a mathematics educator in the New Haven Public School district since 2008. Her role is to design and implement lesson plans for three courses, provide after school tutoring to students in need of extra instruction, and provide a line of communication between the students, parents, and teachers.
Prior to coming to Quinnipiac, Somers coached volleyball and track as a graduate assistant at St. Lawrence for two seasons before joining Colgate in 2006-07 and Quinnipiac in 2007-08, both as assistant coaching positions. At all three positions she helped in the recruiting of student-athletes, assist with team sessions and provide academic assistance to the student-athletes.
Prior to taking up a coaching career, Somers was a standout athlete at Defiance College where she was an all-conference performer in both volleyball and track. She captained the Yellow Jackets volleyball team to a 26-5 overall record her senior year, compiling 217 kills and 77 blocks to earn second-team all-HCAC honors. On the track, Somers garnered all-conference recognition and was the MVP of the field events both her junior and senior seasons. She was part of a record-setting 4x400 relay team and was named the Defiance College Distinguished Athlete Award winner for 2004.
Somers graduated with an undergraduate degree from Defiance in 2004 and received a Master of Educational Leadership degree from St. Lawrence in 2006. She currently resides in Meriden, Conn.
