HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University women's volleyball coach Kristopher Czaplinski has announced the 31-match schedule for the upcoming 2014 season. The slate features 18 conference matchups via home-and-home series with each league member, as well as 13 non-conference contests involving three in-season tournaments.
"We are excited for the 2014 season," said Czaplinski, who enters his third year at the helm of the program. "We will face a lot of teams that we've played in the last few years, but also have some other teams that we haven't had a chance to play. Between non-conference and league play, our schedule presents a tough challenge for us but will adequately prepare us for the MAAC Championships in Disney."
Quinnipiac raises the curtain for the 2014 season on Aug. 29 when it battles Lafayette in the opening game of the Hofstra Invitational. The Bobcats wrap up the weekend the following day with matches against the hosting Pride of Hofstra and former Northeast Conference rival St. Francis Brooklyn.
The home-opener is next on tap for Quinnipiac, as the Bobcats welcome UMass-Lowell to Burt Kahn Court for a midweek clash on Sept. 3 (7 PM). After that, the team heads to Maryland for a three-game stint at the Loyola Invitational. The tournament opens with one game on Sept. 5 followed by a doubleheader on Sept. 6.
The following weekend, Quinnipiac wraps up its tournament schedule at the 10th annual Providence College Invitational. Joining the Bobcats and the Friars in the event will be the Bears of Morgan State and the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson. All games will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence.
The all-important Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) slate begins on Sept. 20 against Manhattan College and Sept. 21 against Iona College at home. The Jaspers and the Gaels tiptoed into the MAAC Tournament last season with the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds but were defeated in the semifinals. After a second non-conference midweek clash with Fairleigh Dickinson (Sept. 24), Quinnipiac heads down the road to defending MAAC Champions Fairfield University (Sept. 27) before concluding September competition at Hartford on Sept. 28.
October features just four home games for the Bobcats - two taking place on the first weekend against MAAC Runner-Up Marist (Oct. 4) and Siena (Oct. 5) and two taking place on the last weekend of the month against Saint Peter's (Oct. 25) and Rider (Oct. 26). During the middle weeks of the month, Quinnipiac travels to Siena (Oct. 8), Saint Peter's (Oct. 11), Rider (Oct. 12), Niagara (Oct. 18), Canisius (Oct. 19) and Marist (Oct. 22).
November kicks off with a pair of home games against Fairfield on Nov. 1 and the team's final non-conference game against NJIT on Nov. 2. Quinnipiac hits the road the following weekend to take on Manhattan (Nov. 8) and Iona (Nov. 9) before wrapping up regular-season play against Canisius (Nov. 15) and Niagara (Nov. 16) at Burt Kahn Court. The Bobcats will celebrate senior day against the Purple Eagles on that Sunday.
The MAAC Championship venue will be the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla. Each team qualifies for the single-elimination tournament, with the first round set for Thursday, Nov. 20. The quarterfinals will take place on Friday, Nov. 21; the semifinals on Saturday, November 22; and the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 23. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
