Quinnipiac Women's Volleyball Holds Positive Play Event for Shepherd Glen Elementary and Helen Street School

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team helped organize and operate a staff vs. staff between Shepherd Glen Elementary and Helen Street School as a part of the Athletic Department's Positive Play Initiative. The fierce matchup between staffs was held on Friday, March 21st in the Hamden High School gymnasium.

Four members of the women's volleyball team – junior Tanner Celestin (Norco, Calif.) and freshmen Sam Ale chko (Harrington Park, N.J.), Emma Ogden (Crown Point, Ind.) and Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Ind.) – all volunteered their time to serve as officials for the staff vs. staff match.

"Seeing all the young students standing in the bleachers with painted signs and t-shirts was really cool," Celestin said. "You could tell that the kids were excited to cheer on their teachers alongside their parents and friends."

Both Shepherd Glen and Helen Street are members of the Hamden Public School System and are located a mere nine minutes (less than four miles) apart. The match began at 6:00 pm and drew a large crowd filled with families and friends who adorned posters and plenty of cheers for their respective teaching staffs.

"I know all of us were excited to have the opportunity to support out community's educators and young students," Celestin said. "As volleyball players, it's nice to see the sport we love bringing people together. We hope to visit both Spring Glen and Helen Street soon."

About Helen Street School (According to Official Website)

Located in the southern corner of Hamden, Helen Street School teaches Prekindergarten all the way through sixth grade. With an enrollment of 339, this elementary school offers a welcoming neighborhood environment for students and families with diversity and character at the foundation of the school's education.

About Shepherd Glen School (According to Official Website)

Shepherd Glen School is located in Hamden, Conn., just north of New Haven. The school is one of eight elementary schools in town, with about 400 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The original Shepherd Glen School opened in 1924, and was renovated over the years in 1929, 1950 and 1971. The school was demolished and a new three-story building opened in 2003 directly next to the original site.

The visitation was all made possible through Quinnipiac Athletics' Department-wide commitment to community service as a part of their Positive Play Initiative. Women's volleyball head coach Kris Czaplinski is only in his second-year on the job but has already strengthened his team's dedication level throughout the surrounding area with visitations to soup kitchens in New Haven, holding volleyball clinics for local middle and high school students and most-recently spending time reading to children at Montessori Preschool in New Haven.
