BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior outside hitter Tanner Celestin (Norco, Calif.) smashed a season high 13 kills but it wasn't enough as the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team fell short against Canisius, 3-1. Quinnipiac put everything together in the third set as they nearly doubled up Canisius in kills, 13-7, but struggled in the three other sets as the Golden Griffins picked up the victory on Saturday from Koessler Athletic Center (25-12, 25-21, 24-26, 25-12). The Bobcats' loss drops them to 5-25 (3-15 MAAC) while Canisius improves to 11-17 (9-8 MAAC).
The Bobcat offense was supplied by Celestin (13 kills) who was just one kill short of matching her career high set in 2011 during her freshman campaign. It does, however, represent the most Celestin has compiled in a match this season and more than her prior four matches combined. Her day was also filled with five digs and two blocks to round out her solid day on the road.
Junior Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) continued her impressive play at the setter position with 30 assists, seven digs and three blocks on Saturday, narrowly missing her fourth double double of the season. Freshman Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska) added six kills with just one error (.417 hitting percentage) to go along with five blocks to boost her MAAC-leading total up to 131 on the season. Leigh also improved her hitting percentage to an otherworldly .303 in conference play which is the third-best among all MAAC players.
Rounding out the day for the Bobcats was sophomore Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) who compiled nine kills and seven digs for a nice all-around performance while senior Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) went into double figures with 11 digs on Saturday. Senior Bonnie Conklin (five blocks) and freshman Cody Michaels (seven digs) also saw some time and performed well on the defensive end.
After falling in the first set, 25-12, the Bobcats had the second set in control throughout the early stages as they jumped out to a 9-2 lead off the play of Leigh (three kills, one block). The Golden Griffins, however, slowly worked their way back into the set and took their first lead in the frame at 18-17. Quinnipiac managed to hold serve and keep it close until a 4-0 Canisius run handed them the 25-21 victory.
Quinnipiac played a much similar game in the third set as they jumped out to an early lead again as a kill from freshman Jamie Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) made it 12-8 Bobcats. Canisius then made their run as they went on a 12-3 run to take what looked like a commanding 20-15 lead. On the doorstep of defeat, the Bobcats dug in and worked their way back to a one point game and eventually tied the score at 24-24 with a Thornton kill. After Conklin and Paolucci combined for a block, the set ended on a setting error to give the Bobcats a 26-24 victory.
Momentum seemed to be in the Bobcats' favor but not for long as the Golden Griffins commanded the final set with a 25-12 victory. Celestin did her best to keep her team in the game with four kills in the stanza but Canisius was not to be denied from their home court.
The Bobcats' 2013 season will conclude tomorrow with a match against Niagara set to begin at 1:00 pm from the confines of the Gallagher Athletic Center.
