HAMDEN, Conn. – Freshman right side Jamie Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) tied a career high with 13 kills on Sunday but the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team fell to Canisius, 3-1, from Burt Kahn Court. With the loss the Bobcats fall to 4-16 (2-6 MAAC) on the season while the Golden Griffins bump up to 7-13 (5-4 MAAC).
Paolucci tied a career high she set back on Oct. 5 against Rider with her 13 kills. She added three digs and two blocks to complete her performance on Sunday. Freshman setter Emma Ogden (Crown Point, Ind.) went for 30 assists and two blocks against Canisius as she now has posted nine games with at least 30 helpers this season. Freshman middle hitter Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska) added four kills and a game-high three blocks to increase her MAAC-leading total to 90 blocks this season.
Canisius had everything working early as they went for 13 kills against just five errors as a team. The kickstarted the match with a dominating 11-2 run that created all the separation the team would need to close out the first set victory. The Bobcats would put together a nice run of their own to close the gap to as few as four points. One of Paolucci's 13 kills put her team within a deficit of 18-14 but Canisius took advantage of two straight Bobcat errors in the closing stages to win the first set running away, 25-17.
Quinnipiac showed some signs of life in the second set as they would give up an early lead but ultimately come back and nearly take the lead halfway through the stanza. Senior Bonnie Conklin (Plano, Texas) pounded a kill to cut the gap to two points, closing out a nice Bobcat run in which they won five of six points. The Golden Griffins, however, would ultimately impose their will to claim eight of the final 12 points and take the second set victory, 25-19.
The third and final set was the ultimate decider as Canisius once again controlled the set in the early stages to build an 11-4 lead. The Bobcats held a lead at 4-3 before eight straight points for the Golden Griffins was enough to stretch their lead to a commanding number. Quinnipiac showed some grit to come back once again as the Canisius lead was cut to 17-14 after an ace from senior Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) but it wasn't enough in the end as the Golden Griffins reeled off eight of the final 10 points to take the victory, 25-16.
The Bobcats face a tough slate of games ahead as the team will need to regroup for a battle against Siena on Saturday at 1:00 pm and then the team will take on Marist on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
