Bobcats Fall in Straight Sets to Colonials, 3-0, in NEC Action on Sunday
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Quinnipiac women's volleyball team fell at the hands of Robert Morris on Sunday at the Sewall Center, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-9). Sophomore setter Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) carried her team in defeat, posting her third double-double of the season and fifth for Quinnipiac with 17 assists and 10 digs. The loss drops the Bobcats to 1-20 (0-12 NEC) and the NEC's third-place Colonials improve to 13-14 (9-2 NEC).
Quinnipiac had their opportunities in the opening set as they were paced by sophomore outside hitter Tanner Celestin (Norco, Calif.) who recorded four of her seven kills in the stanza. Trailing 12-9, Celestin tallied back-to-back kills to begin a 6-2 Quinnipiac run that gave them a 15-14 advantage. Robert Morris however regained control and reeled off an 11-3 run to close out the first set with a 25-18 victory.
The Bobcats hung in the second set, down as much as seven in the early going. They closed the gap to five points, winning three points in-a-row to close the gap to 17-12. The Colonials were just too tough though as they ran away with the set late, claiming eight of the last 10 points to take the 25-14 win.
Robert Morris dominated the third and final set with 10 kills compared to just three for Quinnipiac. A 10-0 Colonial run proved vital in the final set as they ran away with a 25-9 victory to seal the match.
Robinson's effort highlighted the Bobcat effort on Sunday with her fifth career double-double to go along with two blocks. Celestin provided a team-high seven kills while freshman outside hitter Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) compiled six kills and seven digs. Junior libero Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) tallied seven digs and junior middle hitter Bonnie Conklin (Plano, Texas) contributed three kills and four blocks.
Several individual efforts highlighted Robert Morris in victory. Una Japundza had a game-high seven blocks while Hannah Hoffman posted an impressive 30 assists, six digs, three blocks, and three kills. Lindsey Monger and Becky Jay each combined for 17 kills, nine digs, and six blocks.
Quinnipiac will return home next week for a pair of NEC showdowns. Due to Hurricane Sandy, the originally scheduled match against Bryant has been rescheduled to Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. and the Bobcats will also welcome St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
