Bobcats Women's Volleyball Claims Third Set But Falls to Fordham, 3-1, at Bucknell Invitational
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bobcats fought to claim the third set but couldn't hold off the Rams as the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team fell to Fordham, 3-1 (13-25, 14-25, 25-19, 8-25), on Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational. Senior middle hitter Bonnie Conklin (Plano, Texas) continued her impressive play for the tournament with team-highs in kills with seven and blocks with four. Sophomore setter Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) came back from her stellar game against Providence on Friday, where she had 37 assists and four blocks, and added 19 assists and two total blocks against the Rams. With the loss Quinnipiac falls to 1-7 and Fordham improves to 7-9 overall.
Despite a Conklin kill to start the scoring for the Bobcats, Fordham jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the first set. The Bobcats kept the deficit at six points for most of the opening set at 14-8 but then the Rams took control, winning 11 of the next 16 points to claim the 25-13 set victory.
Robinson teamed up with freshman outside hitter Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) for a kill to jumpstart the second set as Quinnipiac won the first two points. The Rams then seized momentum, winning the next seven consecutive points to claim a 7-2 advantage. Conklin and freshman middle hitter Melissa Dal Pozzo (Reading, Mass.) had a pair of kills to close the gap to five and Robinson teamed up with Conklin for a block and put the score at 16-13. The Rams then took control late as they won nine of the last 10 points in the set for a 25-14 win.
The Bobcats didn't go down without a fight as they put together an impressive 25-19 third set victory. Quinnipiac jumped out to a 9-2 lead with Conklin (two kills and one block) and Robinson (three assists and one block) leading the charge. The Rams fought back and claimed the next six points to close the gap to one but the Bobcats settled down as both teams traded points until the score was 13-12. Sophomore outside hitter Tanner Celestin (Norco, Calif.) with two kills and a block assist that increased the score to 21-16 in favor of Quinnipiac. The set ended with a Fordham error as the Bobcats claimed the set.
The fourth set was dominated by Fordham as they finished with a 25-8 victory to claim the match at 3-1. Conklin and Thornton each had two kills in the set and Robinson notched six assists in the set for the Bobcats.
Celestin finished with four kills digs on the afternoon while Thornton also added four kills to go along with nine digs. Senior middle hitter Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.) had another solid game with three kills and nine digs and junior libero Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) notched another double-digit dig game (her fifth of the season) with 10 to go along with two service aces.
The Bobcats will next take on the host Bucknell at 5 p.m. for their third and final game at the Invitational.
