Tanner Celestin Leads Women's Volleyball in Defeat Against Fairfield
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Despite a season-high six kills from sophomore outside hitter Tanner Celsetin (Norco, Calif.), the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team fell to Fairfield 3-0 in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday. The Bobcats (0-6) fell behind early with 25-9 and 25-10 results in the first two sets before fighting back in the third with a 25-19 loss to Fairfield (2-5).
The first set was dominated by the Stags and their outstanding outside hitter in senior Brianna Dixion who recorded five kills to give Fairfield a quick 1-0 lead. The Bobcats kept the deficit within four points at 8-4 before the Stags took off and scored six unanswered points to increase the set lead to 14-4 and later closed with the victory.
Quinnipiac again was victimized by a long Fairfield run in the second set as the score was tied early on at 3-3 before the Stags went on a 13-1 run and closed out with a 25-10 advantage.
The Bobcats put together an inspired effort in the third set as they battled to a six-point defeat at 25-19. Celestin led the charge as Quinnipiac managed to hold a lead at 13-12 and would keep the deficit within one point late in the set at 18-17. Her four kills in the third accounted for more than half of the Bobcat's total in the set. The Stags however took control late behind a pair of kills from Camille Coffey to end the match and give Fairfield the win.
Fairfield was led by their sophomore setter Rachel Romansky who recorded 30 assists, nine digs, four service aces, two kills, and one block for the match. Nicole Marzik and Hayley Moyer led the Stags in kills with nine and eight respectively.
Quinnipiac's Celestin has been on a tear of late, leading the team in kills over the past three games with 14, and bringing her team-leading total to 19 for the season. Her six kills against Fairfield, to go along with a .294 kill percentage, are tied with sophomore Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) and senior Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.) for the most of any Bobcat player in a game for the 2012 season. Robinson played in her first game as the primary setter for Quinnipiac and finished with 14 assists and four digs. Payne and Olivia Grattan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) both totaled three blocks. Junior libero Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) compiled her third double-digit dig outing on the season with 10 against the Stags.
The Bobcats will next play in the Bucknell Invitational tournament between Friday Saturday Sep. 14 – 15 at the Davis Gym in Lewisburg, Pa. The Bobcats will face off against Providence on Sep. 14 at 5 p.m. before taking on Fordham and Bucknell at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively on Sep. 15.
