Women's Volleyball Opens in West Point

The Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team opened the 2012 campaign this past weekend with the West Point Invitational at Gillis Field House in West Point, N.Y. Hosted by Army; the two-day event began on Friday, Aug. 24 and ran through Saturday, Aug. 25. The Bobcats suffered defeats to the Black Knights, Stony Brook, and Indiana and will look to bounce back in a big way at the Akron Invitational.

All-Time Against The Field

The Bobcats are in line for their first matchup against Montana St. Their only game against Akron in program history resulted in a 3-0 loss on Aug. 30, 2002.

Scouting The Zips

The Zips are coming off a disappointing 2011 season where they finished 4-25, ending the year on a 10-game losing streak. Akron is coming off a 1-3 record at the South Carolina Invitational this past weekend. Akron features impressive height in the middle, with nine players at least 5'10 or taller. Their offensive attack is also very balanced, with seven players compiling at least 11 kills, led by senior Tina Dimitrijevs's 41. Senior setter Morgan Kuhn also put together a solid weekend, posting 141 assists, 33 digs, and five service aces for the Zips.

Scouting The Bobcats

After beginning last season on a 15-game losing streak and not achieving their second victory until Oct. 8, the Bobcats enter the Akron Invitational with a 2-1 record. Montana St. is coming off a successful stint at the SIU-Edwardsville Tournament. Junior outside hitter Sarah Horton comes to Akron with the most kills (60) of any player at the tournament. Senior setter Jennifer Lundquist comes in with 133 assist and the highest attack percentage (.545) on the team. The Bobcats also feature a host of blockers up front as six players have all recorded at least seven total blocks through three games.

Welcome Back, Logan

After missing the majority of the 2011 campaign with an injury, junior libero Logan Riker impressed over the weekend. She recorded 26 digs and four service aces on her way to being named to the West Point Invitational All-Tournament Team. Riker is already on her way to a bounce-back season after leading the team in digs in 2010 with 423.

Check Out The Digs

Riker and sophomore Brittanie Robinson both posted double-digits in digs on Friday Aug. 24 against Army with 12 and 10 respectively. As a team, the Bobcats recorded 42 digs on the afternoon, which represents the highest total thus far throughout the 2012 season.

Threes a Crowd

Robinson, along with fellow sophomore Tierra Allen and freshman Chandler Thornton headline the group atop the kills list early-on for the Bobcats. All three underclassmen are tied with eight kills after three matches and are in line for big offensive seasons early in their Quinnipiac careers.

On Deck

Quinnipiac hits the road again for a non-conference tilt against Fairfield on Wednesday Sep. 5 before playing in their third and final tournament of the year at the Bucknell Invitational. The Bobcats will join Providence, Fordham and the hosting Bison in Pennsylvania for the two-day tournament.
