Women's Volleyball Set For 2012 Season
The Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team opens the 2012 campaign this weekend with the West Point Invitational at Gillis Field House in West Point, N.Y. Hosted by Army; the two-day event will begin on Friday, August 24 and run through Saturday, August 25. The Bobcats will face the Black Knights on Friday (11 a.m.), before taking on Stony Brook (11 a.m.) and Big 10 power Indiana (1 p.m.) on Saturday afternoon.
All-Time Against The Field
The Bobcats are in search for their first win against all three programs they will face. The Black Knights hold a 4-0 record, while the Seawolves own an 8-0 mark against Quinnipiac. QU has yet to square off against the Hoosiers of Indiana.
Scouting The Black Knights
Fresh off a 23-8 season, the Black Knights look for similar success in 2012. Army claimed the #2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, and advanced to the championship match, but fell short to American in four sets. The Black Knights have a lot to look forward to, as the squad returns its two best hitters and its setter from a year ago. Senior Ariana Mankus and junior Megan Wilton recorded 421 and 318 kills, respectively, while sophomore Mary Vaccaro dished out over 1,300 assists in her inaugural season.
Scouting The Seawolves
Coming off a trip to the America East finals; the Stony Brook women's volleyball team heads into the 2012 season with high expectations. The Seawolves return eight letter-winners from last year's squad and also welcome one of the best recruiting classes in program history. The Seawolves will look to Evann Slaughter to lead the attack, as the junior middle finished second on the team in kills (277) and led the team in blocks (107) last season.
Scouting The Hoosiers
The Hoosiers went 9-23 last season; but earned a spot in the Sweet 16 just two years ago. IU returns nine letter-winners led by senior Kelci Marschall, who totaled a team-high 344 kills last seasons. After a year on the bench, junior Jordan Haverlyr returns to the court after a red-shirt season. She contains a team-best career 909 kills, after a breakout year in 2010.
Front Line Power
Senior Taylor Payne and junior Olivia Grattan will be the focal point for the Bobcats this season. Payne finished her with her strongest season to date in 2011 as she contributed a team-high 65 blocks and ranked third in kills with 150. Grattan, who plays alongside Payne on the front line, also had a standout season last year for the Bobcats. Her 162 kills led the team; she finished second with 57 blocks, and compiled the highest hitting percentage of any Bobcat.
Welcome Back, Logan
Excited and anxious to return to the lineup will be junior Logan Riker. Riker missed the majority of the 2011 campaign with an injury and her leadership will be a valuable asset for the Bobcats moving forward. Quinnipiac's starting libero, she led the team with 423 digs two years ago.
Sophomores Brittanie Robinson and Tierra Allen will look to provide even more offense for the Bobcats. Robinson had a sensational rookie season and emerged as a formidable weapon on the outside. She tallied 143 kills and 154 digs last season and will be in line for more attack opportunities after Carey's departure. Allen returns after averaging 1.96 kills per set, tops on the team.
Next weekend, Quinnipiac hits the road again for the Akron Invitational. The Bobcats will join Southeastern La., Montana St. and the hosting Zips in Ohio for the two-day tournament.
