HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University Women's Volleyball Head Coach Robin Lamott Sparks has announced that two incoming student-athletes will join the Bobcats for the 2012 campaign. Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) and Katie Exum (Torrance, Calif.) will be eligible for competition next year, as QU reloads for another season in the Northeast Conference.

Moran, a 5-foot-7 setter from Cypress, Texas, endured a tremendous four-year career at Cypress Woods High School. As a junior and senior, Moran helped lead the Wildcats volleyball team to back-to-back District Championships; which also included a trip to the semifinals of the Texas State Championship Tournament in 2010. Furthermore, in her final two campaigns, Cypress Woods was recognized on the national stage as the Wildcats cracked the top-25 poll each season.

"Rachel will be a great asset to the program, said Coach Sparks. "She has trained at a high level and competed with and against the best in the country. She has a toughness and confidence that is apparent on the court when she runs the offense, and can be an offensive threat as well. In addition, her athleticism and knowledge of the game will be invaluable."

Moran was also a member of Willowbrook Volleyball, a club team out of Houston, Texas. The squad competes in USA Volleyball (USAV) and travels to many national tournaments throughout the season. During her tenure, the team qualified for the Junior Olympics twice and medaled in several other competitions. She was a five-time captain as well.

Exum, a 6-foot outside/middle hitter from Torrance, Calif., was a three-year member of the South High School varsity volleyball team. Exum enjoyed a stellar career with the Rebels, leading the squad to three consecutive Pioneer League Titles. From 2009-11, Exum and the Rebels compiled two undefeated conference campaigns, a trip to the CIF-SS Div 2AA quarterfinals in 2010, and runs to the CIF-SS Div 2AA  semifinals in 2009 and 2011. She was a three-time All-Pioneer League selection, which featured First Team laurels as a junior and senior. In her final year, she hit at a .335 clip, which was good enough for 11th in all of CIF-SS Division 2AA.

"Katie will give us additional depth and height in the middle which will help push all our athletes," said Coach Sparks. "I know the training she will get this club season in Southern California will help prepare her for the demands of Division I volleyball.  The more strength she gains, the better she is going to be. Katie is also a terrific student and leader, and I am sure she will make an impact at Quinnipiac beyond the volleyball court."

In addition to her success at South High School, Exum also played for the Southern California Volleyball Association (SCVA). During her stint with the club, the team has fared very well in several west-coast regional tournaments; including a second place showing at the American Colorado Crossroads Junior National Qualifier in 2011. She served as the team captain that year as well.
