Women's Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day; Falls To FDU, 3-0
HAMDEN, Conn. – Seniors Kayla Lawler (Louisville, Ky.), Kelby Carey (Surfside, Calif.) and Brittany Garrett (Ossining, N.Y.) were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the women's volleyball program on Sunday afternoon, as the Bobcats faced off against Fairleigh Dickinson on Senior Day at Burt Kahn Court. The Knights defeated QU by a final score of 3-0 (25-18, 25-20 and 25-20), the final home match for the three senior-class members.
After dropping the first set, the Bobcats battled back with better showings in the second and third stanzas. In the second frame, QU rallied off three consecutive points late in the game, cutting its deficit to just four points. However, back-to-back kills by Sarah Berkland and Chelsea Braga granted the Knights a 2-0 lead before the 10-minute intermission.
In the third and final set, the two teams went point-for-point until the scoreboard read, 9-9. The Knights then posted a 4-0 run, taking a lead that they would never relinquish. The Bobcats closed their deficit to three points with the score 23-20, but couldn't contain junior Meaghan Wheeler in the final two points. Wheeler tallied two kills for the 24th and 25th points, leading FDU to its seventh win in conference play.
Carey and Lawler each finished their careers at Burt Kahn Court on a high note, as the duo paced the QU offense. Carey posted nine kills at a .348 clip to go along with nine digs. She is now just two shy of 1,000, likely to surpass the mark next weekend. Lawler composed a steady offense with 26 assists and two aces on the afternoon. Sophomore Olivia Grattan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded nine kills and just one error for a .419 attacking percentage, while Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) anchored the back-row with 11 digs.
Fairleigh Dickinson, led by Wheeler, posted 51 kills in the match including a set-high 18 in the second game. Wheeler finished with 21 kills and five errors in 44 total attacks for a .364 hitting percentage. Braga and Berkland also compiled double-digit kills with 11 and 10, respectively.
The Bobcats will wrap up the regular season next weekend with a pair of road matches in Pennsylvania. On Saturday, November 12, QU takes on Robert Morris at 3 p.m., followed by its last game of the season against the Red Flash of St. Francis (Pa.) at 1 p.m. For all of the latest news, scores and highlights, please visit the official website of Quinnipiac athletics, www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
