Bobcats Travel To Sacred Heart For NEC Showdown
The Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team will look to knock off the lone Northeast Conference undefeated team on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats travel to Fairfield, Conn. to face off against Sacred Heart at the William H. Pitt Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
Scouting the Pioneers
Sacred Heart enters the weekend with the best record in the NEC - 14-5 overall and a flawless 4-0 mark in conference play. Furthermore, the Pioneers have been outstanding over the last two weeks. SHU went 5-1 with the lone setback coming against Marquette in a 3-1 loss. The key to the Pioneers success has been a potent combination of offense and defense. The squad ranks first in the league with 972 kills, averaging just fewer than 14 per game. On the other side of the net, the Pioneers are one of three teams who have accumulated over 1,000 digs on the season. The team averages 15.36 per set to go along with 116 blocks (1.66 per game).
Seniors Kayla Lawler (Louisville, Ky.), Kelby Carey (Surfside, Calif.) and freshman Brittanie Robinson (Fresno, Calif.) each recorded a double-double in the 3-2 victory against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Oct. 2. Lawler dished out a season-high 47 assists with 11 digs, Carey registered 10 kills and 13 digs and Robinson hammered 11 kills to go along with 28 digs.
Quinnipiac ranks fourth in the Northeast Conference in serving aces this season. The Bobcats have a total of 79 for a 1.34 per game clip. Kayla Lawler, ranks 17th in the NCAA, first in the NEC and leads the team in this category. She averages 0.49 aces per set and has 28 on the year.
Senior Kayla Lawler, Quinnipiac's all-time assist leader, recorded her 3,000th career assist in the first set of the Bobcats' match at Central Connecticut on Sep. 25.
Milestone Moments Approaching
Senior Kelby Carey is also approaching a statistical milestone this season. In addition to Lawler's 3,000 assists, Carey is well within striking distance of both 1,000 kills and digs.
Acing the Test
Senior Kayla Lawler tallied a career-high seven service aces in the Bobcats' match against Navy on Sep. 17 – a match in which the Bobcats had 16 aces as a team.
Freshman Krista Bennett (Scottsdale, Ariz.) set new career-highs in back-to-back matches on Sept. 25 and 28. Bennett tallied 17 digs at Central Connecticut, and topped that with 18 at Bryant. Bennett is second on the Bobcats with 2.56 digs per set.
Next weekend, the Bobcats will return home for a pair of NEC matches. Quinnipiac welcomes St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday, Oct. 15 and Robert Morris on Sunday, Oct. 16 to Burt Kahn Court. First serve for both contests are set for 2 p.m. Fans can follow all the action with live stats at the official athletics website of Quinnipiac University at www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
