HAMDEN, Conn. - Kayla Lawler (Louisville, Ky.) and Kelby Carey (Surfside, Calif.) each had double-doubles, but the Quinnipiac University volleyball team was defeated by Long Island in five sets, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the Burt Kahn Court. Lawler had 48 assists, 10 digs and five service aces, while Carey added a team-high 16 kills and 11 digs. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 6-18 (4-6 NEC), while the Blackbirds improve to 8-17 (7-4 NEC).
The teams exchanged set victories throughout, with the Blackbirds winning the first, third and fifth sets, by 25-22, 25-21 and 15-10 margins, respectively. The Bobcats won the second set, 25-14, and the fourth set, 25-23.
Amanda Armstrong (Waukesha, Wis.) had 12 kills and a team-high five blocks for the Bobcats, while Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.) also added five blocks. Olivia Grattan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 11 kills and four blocks, while Stephanie Biediger (Houston, Texas) added 10 kills and seven digs. Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) had a match-high 24 digs.
The Bobcats return to action Sunday, when they play host to NEC-leading Sacred Heart. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Burt Kahn Court.
