Volleyball Outlasts St. Francis (N.Y.) In Five Sets, 3-2
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - Sophomore Kelby Carey (Surfside, Calif.) smashed a career-high 24 kills and sophomore Kayla Lawler (Richmond, Ind.) added a career-high 53 assists as the Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team outlasted St. Francis (N.Y.) in five sets, 3-2, Friday night at the Genovesi Center. With the win, the Bobcats sweep the season series from the Terriers (1-13, 0-4 NEC) and improve to 2-17 (2-5 NEC).
"I couldn't be prouder of the team tonight," said Quinnipiac Head Coach Robin Sparks. "We maintained our composure under pressure and made big plays when we needed to. It was a hard-fought match that took a total team effort."
Sophomore Alyssa Naylor (San Diego, Calif.) added 14 kills and a team-high four blocks. Lawler narrowly missed her first career triple-double, adding 12 digs and nine kills to her stat line, while hitting a team-best .389. Freshman Logan Riker (Bowling Green, Ohio) had a team-high 15 digs, while graduate student Erin Overdevest (Bridgeton, N.J.) and freshman Chelsey Pachoud (Riverview, Fla.) also reached double-digit digs with 13 and 10, respectively. Pachoud also added eight kills.
After a sluggish start in which St. Francis (N.Y.) breezed past the Bobcats, 25-12, in the first set, Quinnipiac bounced back to take the second and third sets, 25-21 and 25-22, respectively. The Terriers evened the score with a 26-24 fourth-set victory, before the Bobcats were too much in the decisive fifth set, winning 15-10, to clinch the match. Quinnipiac hit .500 in the final set.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday when they continue NEC action in Brooklyn, N.Y. Quinnipiac takes on Long Island at 4 p.m. at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center.
