CHICAGO Kayla Lawler (Richmond, Ind.) had 59 assists and Jenna Benigno (Milford, Conn.) totaled 23 kills, but the Quinnipiac volleyball team was defeated by Providence (3-1) and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (3-0), in the final rounds of the Cougar Invitational. With the losses, the Bobcats fall to 3-18, while the Friars move to 9-9 and the Cougars improve to 4-7.
Freshmen Kelby Carey (Surfside Colony, Calif.) and Alyssa Naylor (San Diego, Calif.) contributed 16 kills apiece, while Stephanie Biediger (Houston, Texas) added 13 kills. Biediger's 21 digs led the Bobcats while Crista Valentino (Oakdale, N.Y.) was close behind with 20 digs. Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) paced Quinnipiac with four blocks.
The Bobcats started the day on a positive note, taking the first set from Providence, 25-20. Quinnipiac looked to be in control of the second set with a 16-9 lead, but the Friars stormed back to tie it at 17. Providence carried its momentum to a 24-21 lead, but the Bobcats weren't finished. They reeled off four straight points to move to within one point of a set victory. But the Friars won three of the next four points to win the stanza.
Providence finished the match with wins in the final two sets, 25-22 and 25-18, respectively. Lawler compiled 40 of her 59 assists in the match, while Benigno tallied 18 of her 23 kills against the Friars.
The match-up with the Cougars proved to be a more difficult task for the Bobcats. SIUE swept the Bobcats, 25-15, 25-16, 25-18. Lawler finished with 19 assists, while Biediger's seven kills, Dolan's two blocks and Valentino's eight digs led Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats conclude a four-match Chicago road trip when they face Illinois-Chicago tomorrow. The match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at the Flames Athletic Center.
