Let's Play Four

The Quinnipiac University volleyball team plays four matches in Chicago this weekend, taking part in the Chicago State Invitational, followed by a Sunday match-up at Illinois-Chicago. The Bobcats are coming off one of their most successful weekends, earning a sweep of Coppin State and taking Hartford to five sets.

Day and Night

After falling to NJIT, 3-0, in their first match of the Quinnipiac Bobcat Invitational, the Bobats bounced back with a sweep of Coppin State in the nightcap. The convincing win (25-19, 25-6, 25-15) snapped a 14-match losing streak.

Spreading the Wealth

Six different Quinnipiac players had at least 10 kills in the three-match Quinnipiac Bobcat Invitational, Sept. 27-28, with the constant being freshman setter Kayla Lawler (Richmond, Ind.). Lawler totaled 77 assists and even added 11 kills of her own. Kelby Carey (Surfside Colony, Calif.) had a team-high 23 kills, while Stephanie Biediger (Houston, Texas) (21), Jenna Benigno (Milford, Conn.) (20), Alyssa Naylor (San Diego, Calif.) (16) and Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) (10) also had strong weekends.

Scouting The Chicago State Cougars

Chicago State enters the weekend at 0-16 and has yet to win a set this season. Junior Shamara Clark leads the Cougars with 79 kills, while sophomore Hanya Minta has a team-best 156 assists. Junior Chy Chrichton has a team-high 118 digs, while freshman Mazvita Maziveyi's 14 blocks are tops on the team.

Scouting The Providence Friars

The Friars are 8-9 this season, including a 3-0 win against Quinnipiac at the Maine Invitational, Sept. 6. Senior Elizabeth Flynn's 189 kills lead the Friars, while senior Kelly Krahenbuhl's 206 digs are a team best. Senior Sara Sheehan has run the offense efficiently with 468 assists, while senior Jeannette Toney has been effective at the net with 51 blocks.

Scouting The So. Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars

The Cougars enter the weekend 2-7 with wins against Tennessee-Martin and Eastern Illinois. Sophomore Sydney Winslow has a team-high 103 kills, while senior Mallory Clements' 294 assists lead the Cougars. Sophomore Diane Schmidlin and senior Emily Rahn have 112 and 107 digs, respectively. Senior Samantha Schulte has a team-best 28 blocks.

Scouting The Illinois-Chicago Flames

Illinois-Chicago is 5-8 this season, including wins against DePaul, North Dakota State, Chicago State, Youngstown State and Central Michigan. Sophomore Casie Sullivan's 110 kills lead a balanced offensive attack, while the Flames feature two talented setters in sophomore Dana Van Syckle (243 assists) and sophomore Jessica Dalke (203 assists). Junior Katerina Hanackova has a team-high 148 digs, while sophomore Epiphany Davis' 35 blocks lead the team.

Set and Spike

Lawler and Naylor lead the Bobcats in assists and kills, respectively, to create a young, dynamic duo. Lawler has contributed 428 assists, while Naylor has a team-high 128 kills, including a 2.10 kills per set clip. Naylor has hit .321 for the season, while also leading Quinnipiac in blocks with 38.

She's on the All-Tournament Team Every Time

Naylor has made the all-tournament team in four of the five tournaments the Bobcats have played this season. She earned the same recognition at the Quinnipiac Invitational after compiling 36 kills, a .336 hitting percentage and five blocks in four matches. Naylor was then named all-tournament at the Maine Invitational with 27 kills, a .442 hitting percentage and seven blocks in three matches. She also earned a spot on the Brown Invitational All-Tournament Team, hitting .400 with 21 kills and seven blocks. Most recently, she took Quinnipiac Bobcat Invitational All-Tournament Team recognition after helping QU to a 3-0 win against Coppin State, Sept. 27.

On Deck

The Bobcats return to action, Wednesday, Oct. 8, when they play host to future NEC opponent Bryant. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Burt Kahn Court.
