HAMDEN, Conn. The Quinnipiac University volleyball team hit a season-high .351 and four different players had at least six kills as the Bobcats breezed past Coppin State, 3-0, in the nightcap of two matches played in the Quinnipiac Bobcat Invitational, Saturday at the Burt Kahn Court. Prior to the victory, which snapped a 14-match losing streak, the Bobcats fell to New Jersey Institute of Technology, 3-0, to begin the day.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 2-15, while the Eagles remain winless at 0-11. Freshman setter Kayla Lawler (Richmond, Ind.) had 29 assists against Coppin State and 45 for the day. Lawler also added a team-high seven digs against Coppin State.
Senior Jenna Benigno (Milford, Conn.) had a team-best eight kills against the Eagles, while freshmen Stephanie Biediger (Houston, Texas) and Kelby Carey (Surfside Colony, Calif.) had seven kills apiece. Fellow freshman Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) also had six kills in the nightcap, while compiling team-bests in hitting percentage (.556) and blocks (3).
For the day, Benigno led the Bobcats with 12 kills, while Dolan's five blocks were a team-best. Biediger's two-match total of 15 digs led Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats battled to a 25-19 first-set win against the Eagles, before cruising in the second and third sets, 25-6 and 25-15, respectively. The dominant final two stanzas closed the match in just 54 minutes.
In the earlier match against NJIT, the Bobcats were edged in the first set, 26-24, before the Highlanders took over with 25-10 and 25-17 wins in the final two sets. Alyssa Naylor's (San Diego, Calif.) six kills paced the Bobcats while senior Crista Valentino's (Oakdale, N.Y.) 14 digs were a team best. The Highlanders improved to 7-7 with the win and moved to 8-7 with a win against Hartford later in the day.
The Bobcats conclude action in the Quinnipiac Bobcat Invitational when they face intrastate foe, Hartford, Sunday at 2 p.m.
