HAMDEN, Conn. The Quinnipiac University volleyball team was defeated twice in the final day of the Quinnipiac Invitational, Saturday at the Burt Kahn Court. The Bobcats lost to Rhode Island, 3-1, to begin the day before falling to Towson, 3-0, in the night cap. Alyssa Naylor (San Diego, Calif.) led the Bobcats with 14 kills on the day, while Kayla Lawler (Richmond, Ind.) (40 assists) and Crista Valentino (Oakdale, N.Y.) (26 digs) led the Bobcats in their respective statistical categories.
For her contributions during the weekend, Naylor was named to the Quinnipiac Invitational All-Tournament Team. In all, Naylor totaled 36 kills, hit .338 and made five blocks.
With the losses, the Bobcats fall to 1-3 on the young season. Rhode Island improved to 2-2, while Towson remained undefeated at 4-0.
Rhode Island immediately put pressure on the Bobcats in Quinnipiac's first match, taking the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-11. The Bobcats were energized in the third set, winning 25-17, but ultimately the Rams took the final set, 25-9.
Towson swept three sets from the Bobcats in the final match of the tournament. The Tigers took the first set, 25-13, before finishing the match with consecutive 25-16 set victories.
The Bobcats return to action Friday, when they travel to Orono, Maine, to take part in the Maine Invitational. They'll meet Kent State at 4 p.m., before challenging Maine and Providence at noon and 4 p.m., respectively, Saturday, Sept. 6.
