Chelsea Savage Dominates Steeplechase to Lead Bobcats in 2014 Season Opener at the Fred Hardy Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Chelsea Savage (Pembroke, Mass.) led strong effort for the Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field team in their 2014 season opener at the Fred Hardy Invitational held at the University of Richmond. Savage dominated the 3000 meter steeplechase on Friday in her first career appearance in the event while the Bobcats showcased their traditional depth in the 1500m to highlight the first day of action from the Fred Hardy Invite as the Bobcats are seeing their first action since the three-week break between indoor and outdoor seasons.

"We had a great start today in our first meet with lots of fast time," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "Chelsea Savage in her first steeple was spectacular while our 1500m girls did a great job with lots of fast times all around."

Competing in her first career steeplechase, Savage looked like a seasoned veteran as she posted the fourth-fastest time in the history of the Quinnipiac women's track and field program. Savage crossed the line in 11:13.92, trailing only three Bobcats for the fastest time Quinnipiac has ever seen. Her outstanding individual effort was also good enough for 3rd place out of 13 competitors in the 3000m event, finishing a mere 13 seconds behind the 1st place finisher and just over three seconds behind 2nd place. Freshman Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Conn.) also competed in the event, her first career outdoor event appearance, and finished in 11th place with a time of 12:09.75.

Quinnipiac also had a strong contingent in the 1500m event as 15 different Bobcats competed in event, easily the most of any school in competition. Sophomore Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, N.J.) led the way for the Bobcats with a 14th place finish out of 77 runners with a time of 4:42.61. Graduate students Rachel Morelli (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Jill Humphreys (Burlington, Mass.) competed in their first events in over a full year as Morelli finished in 23rd place (4:47.64) while Humphreys posted a 30th place result (4:51.69). The senior triplets Brianna, Amanda and Christina Faust represented three of the next four Bobcats to finish with graduate student Christine Donnelly (Philadelphia, Pa.) sandwiched in-between. Brianna (42nd, 4:56.48) led the way with Amanda (43rd, 4:56.78), Donnelly (48th, 4:59.65) and Christina (51st, 5:01.12) right behind.

Senior Kaitlyn Flynn (New Milford, Conn.) competed in the high jump on Friday, the only other event in which a Bobcat appeared, and finished in 9th place with a jump of 1.45m.

The Bobcats will return for day two on Saturday in what will be a full day of action including the 800m, 100m, 400m, 200m, 3000m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay and 4x800m relay.
