EASTON, Mass. – The Quinnipiac University women's outdoor track & field team earned several All-New England honors on Saturday as the Bobcats wrapped up competition at the New England Championships, hosted by Stonehill College in Easton, Mass. The day was highlighted by Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Conn.) and Becca Stabile (Haverhill, Mass.) who fared well in their respective event finals among New England's most talented athletes.
Fresh off the fastest 400m time Quinnipiac has ever seen in both the indoor and outdoor record books, Samuels was just as good in the finals' heat. Samuels posted a time of 55.82 to claim second in the event and was rewarded with All-New England honors. Stabile was just as good on Saturday as she was on Friday, posting a 1:02.26 in the 400m hurdle. Her time was good enough for fifth place and an All-New England laurels.
In the high jump, Samantha Stabile (Haverhill, Mass.) put forth a tremendous effort to accomplish a feat that no other Quinnipiac athlete has done before. Stabile reached 1.60m in the event and became the first athlete to place in the high jump in program history. She finished sixth in the heat and claimed All-New England honors for the Bobcats.
Joining the trio with top-eight finishes were Rachel Morelli (Philadelphia, Pa.), Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, N.J.) and Christina Faust (Macungie, Pa.). Morelli nabbed a fifth place showing in the 1500m with a time of 4:41.46, and was followed closely by Campbell with sixth place finish (4:42.36). Faust and Andrea Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn.) finished sixth and ninth, respectively, in the steeplechase.
In addition, several individual efforts on Quinnipiac's relay teams resulted in strong showings for the Bobcats. Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, N.J.), Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Conn.), Katy Petrie (Cranston, R.I.) and Hannah Donadio (Killingworth, Conn.) combined for a time of 9:13.97 in the 4x8 and garnered another All-New England accolade for the Q. The quartet snatched fifth place in the event.
Also qualifying for the relay portion was Quinnipiac's 4x4 team, featuring Becca Stabile, Nadia Jarvis (Port Republic, N.J.), Samuels and Samantha Stabile. They picked up an eighth place finished in the event, crossing the line with a time of 3:52.97. The group earned All-New England honors for their efforts.
The competition concluded the 2013 season for the Bobcats.
"The entire coaching staff was thrilled with the way the season finished up," said head coach Carolyn Martin. "We had very two (indoor and outdoor) very successful seasons this year and we are looking forward to next year with this young group of athletes. We are losing some tremendous seniors this year which we will truely miss, but we are excited about the direction of the program."
