EMMITSBURGH, Md. - The Quinnipiac University women's outdoor track team finished seventh at the 2010 Northeast Conference Championships Sunday hosted by Mount St. Mary's. The Bobcats were led by sophomore Morgan Roche's (Clifton Park, N.Y.) second-place finish in the 5,000-meter race to help her team to 39 points over the course of the weekend. Roche finished the event in 18:03.35.
Monmouth won the championship with 202 team points. Long Island was second, 57 points back of the Hawks, while the hosts from the Mount were third with 101 team points. Sacred heart, which had led after the first day of the conference meet finished fourth with 97 total points.
Joining Roche in the top 10 in the 5,000 was senior Lindsey Pierret (Morristown, N.J.). Pierret crossed the line in 18:36.71 for a sixth-place showing just one day after finishing fourth in the 10,000 meters.
Sophomore Katie Beam (South Windsor, Conn.) and senior Kristen Stevens (Succasunna, N.J.) rounded out the four Quinnipiac runners to cross the line in the top 15 spots. Beam was 12th with a time of 19:08.59, while Stevens finished 15th in 19:39.10.
"We had a lot of great finishes today," Head Coach Carolyn Martin said. "The team battled hard in the very hot conditions. They were able to pushed through the heat and post a very good score. It may be nearing the end of the season, but this is a group that is on the upswing."
Freshman Andrea Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn.) also had a strong day for the Bobcats, finishing the 3,000-meter steeplechase second overall. Her time of 11:27.37 was four seconds better than the third runner to finish. Sophomore Julie Lanning (Victor, N.Y.) was fifth in the event, crossing the line in 11:50. 32.
Freshman Becca White (Natick, Mass.) was third in the finals of the 1,500 meters. Her time of 4:53.36 was made more impressive by the fact that White ran more than half of the race with just one shoe after it came off nearly 700 meters into the event. Beam also ran in the 1,500 meters, posting a time of 4:56.90, good for ninth place.
Freshman Andrea Seitz (Annendale, N.J.), sophomore Hannah Donadio (Killingworth, Conn.) and juniors Nicole Payne (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and Jeana Favat (Gibbsboro, N.J.) made up Quinnipiac's 4x400-meter relay team. The Bobcats' time of 4:08.29 was good for third in their heat and ninth overall and a new program record in the event.
The Bobcats will return to action on Friday, May 7 when they run in the New England Championships. The meet will be hosted by Northeastern in Boston, Mass.
