BOSTON, Mass. – It was quite a day for the Quinnipiac women's indoor track team as the Bobcats broke school records in three out of the five events they competed in today and were also able to qualify for the 4 x 800m relay finals tomorrow from the ECAC Championships at Boston University. With three more records falling, this now brings the Bobcats' incredible total to 25 times now that program records have been bested in events this season. Graduate student Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) is also scheduled to run in the 3000m finals tomorrow as she joins the relay team in finals competition on Sunday.
"Overall I was so impressed with the all the times today," said Quinnipiac women's indoor track head coach Carolyn Martin. "I think coming off such a successful New England Championships has really motivated the team to keep getting better. They have the want and the drive to keep going and I think this was one of our best days of the season today."
The Bobcats were impressive all-around but none more so than the 4 x 800m relay team of freshmen Chelsea Savage (Pembroke, Mass.) and Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Conn.), sophomore Katy Petrie (Cranston, R.I) and senior Hannah Donadio (Killingworth, Conn.) who all combined to finish with a school record 9:05.29. This same team broke the previous school record last weekend at the New England Championships with a time of 9:10.63 but it only took a week to break it again as they torched the old mark by more than five seconds. The team finished in fifth place out of 15 other competitors in the event as they will move on to the finals tomorrow.
Freshman Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Conn.) was on her game this afternoon as she busted out of the gate for a blazing school record time of 56 seconds in the 400m dash. Samuels has been outstanding for the Bobcats all season as this is the fourth time she has broken the school record in the 400m. Her previous program record however, was 56.72 seconds established at the New England Championships last weekend. Samuels obliterated her previous record but fell short in one of the toughest individual fields at the event as she finished 18th overall out of 33 competitors.
The 4 x 400m team also showed well at the ECAC Championships with a school record time of 3:49.18. The team of freshmen Samuels and Nadia Jarvis (Port Republic, N.J.), junior Samantha Stabile (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore Rebecca Stabile (Haverhill, Mass.) combined to beat their school record they established last week with a time of 3:51.08. The team also fell short of finals qualifying as they finished 18th out of 24 teams.
Two other individual competitors for the Bobcats included Rebecca Stabile in the 500m as she ran a 1:15.20 to finish 14th in the event out of 28 other runners. Also senior Becca White (Natick, Mass.) crossed the line in 17:32.99 in the 5000m run to complete the action for the Bobcats on the afternoon.
Quinnipiac will wrap up their 2012-13 indoor track season as the 4 x 800m relay team will compete in the finals as well as graduate student Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) will also run in the 5000m tomorrow from the ECAC Championships.
