NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women’s indoor track and field team opened the 2011-12 season at the Yale Lid Lifter on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Coxe Cage in New Haven, Conn. The Bobcats competed against, Manhattan, Marist, New Haven, Southern Connecticut State, St. Peter’s, St. Thomas, Stony Brook, Trinity and Yale at the unscored meet.
Quinnipiac’s performances were highlighted by freshman Rebecca Stabile’s (Haverhill, Mass.) first-place finish in the 800-meter run. Stabile won the event with a time of 2:23.43, while fellow teammate Rebecca Smith (Hardyston, N.J.) placed fourth in 2:27.92.
In addition, the Bobcats’ 4x800-meter relay team placed first as they crossed the finish line in 10:10.90. The Bobcats’ relay team was comprised of senior Rachel Morelli (Philadelphia, Pa.), sophomore Valerie Zielinski (Hackettstown, N.J.), freshman Samantha Reilly (Setauket, N.Y.), and junior Jill Humphreys (Burlington, Mass.). The Quinnipiac 4x400-meter relay team put together a sixth-place effort, consisting of Kayla Simms, Nicole Smith, Stabile and Morelli, who combined for 4:29.31.
Four Bobcats represented Quinnipiac in the one-mile run, including sophomore Christina Faust (Macugnie, Pa.) who placed third in 5:27.59 and Humphreys who crossed the finish line in fifth overall with a time of 5:37.99. Reilly finished in seventh place in 5:49.21, while junior Kaitlyn Hammerton (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) placed 10th in 5:58.57.
Morelli also placed third in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:08.14, followed by Zielinski’s fifth-place finish in 3:16.37. Senior Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Kelly Malloy (Sewell, N.J.) competed in the 3,000-meter run where they placed fourth in 10:27.85 and sixth in 11:05.63, respectively.
Stabile continued to lead Quinnipiac in her first collegiate meet as she paced the Bobcats in the 400-meter dash, placing sixth overall in 1:00.37. Freshman Katy Petrie and sophomore Kaitlyn Flynn finished in 11th and 13th place, respectively.
“We didn’t have a lot of people compete today, but we wanted to get some of the team used to running indoors again,” said head coach Carolyn Martin. “I thought we had some great performances. It was good way to start the season and I’m excited to see what the year will bring."
