HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team won for the third time in its last four tries on Sunday afternoon, as the Bobcats handed former NEC foe and in-state rival Sacred Heart a 6-1 loss at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts in Hamden.
Quinnipiac (6-10) seems to be hitting stride at the right time, winning for the third time since a 6-1 defeat at Seton Hall back on March 23rd. The Bobcats earned a comfortable victory against Saint Peter's on Saturday, and looked dominant for a second straight match against the Pioneers. Sacred Heart fell to 5-10 with the loss.
The Bobcats were sharp early on, claiming the doubles marker with wins in all three flights. Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.) and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) solidified the first victory at doubles when they finalized an 8-2 win in the No. 1 slot. They improved to 4-2 this year when paired together.
Quinnipiac needed to work for the other two points, claiming victories in tightly played matches at No. 2 and No. 3. Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) stayed perfect on the year (10-0) with an 8-6 win at No. 3, while Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) escaped with the win in a tie-break, 8-7 (9). It was win No. 51 for Dassa and Raynor.
Singles proved to be a bit easier for Quinnipiac, winning five out of the six flights in straight sets. Dzulynsky picked up win No. 12 this year with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Katie DeRienzo at No. 1; Raynor earned her 12th win of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Gabby Kaldan at No. 2; Young topped Lindsey Post, 6-4, 6-3, to collect her 10th career win; Oliphant bested Paige Olson at No. 4 for her team-leading 13th win of the season; and Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) picked up her 10th win of the year with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.
