HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.) added another singles win to her collegiate resume on Wednesday afternoon, but the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team dropped a non-conference match to Atlantic 10 foe UMass, 5-2, at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
In search of its second win over an A-10 affiliate this season, Quinnipiac (4-10) got off the start it needed by earning the doubles point. Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) won convincingly with an 8-5 decision over Yuliana Motyl and Anna Woosley at No. 3; and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) outlasted Sonia Bokhari and Chanel Glasper in a tie-break to claim the 8-7 victory at No. 2. Chupa and Oliphant improved to 8-0 when paired together while it was the 49th career win for the Dassa-Raynor tandem.
Momentum seemed as if it would carry over into the singles portion, as several Bobcats jumped out in front early on in their matches. However, UMass chipped away and powered past Quinnipiac by taking the first set in five out of the six matches - three of which turning into straight-set triumphs.
The top three flights all needed a third set to determine a winner. After dropping the second set, 7-6, Dzulynsky battled back in commanding fashion with a 6-1 win in the third set. Raynor and Dassa both erased a first-set loss with wins in the second frame but couldn't overcome their opponent in the third set. Raynor fell short by a count of 7-5, and Dassa was defeated 6-3.
