Women's Tennis Edged at Home by Bryant, 4-3; Raynor Picks Up 100th Career Win
HAMDEN, Conn. – The very last point decided Quinnipiac's non-conference women's tennis match on Saturday afternoon, however it belonged to the Bryant Bulldogs in a 4-3 loss for the Bobcats at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts. A milestone was reached for Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.J.) though, as she collected her 100th career win in the match.
Quinnipiac (3-8, 2-0 MAAC) earned three of the seven points, the doubles tally and wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, but couldn't find the final point for the victory. Bryant improved to 6-6 on the season with the win.
The Bobcats jumped in front early, as they continued their success in doubles. Raynor and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) picked up the first Bobcat win with an 8-4 triumph at No. 2 doubles. For Raynor, it was her 100th career win and made her the 17th all-time player and the 13th Division I player in Quinnipiac history to accomplish the feat. It was also Raynor and Dassa's 46th career win when paired together.
After that, Quinnipiac sealed the point with gut-wrenching performances at No. 1 and No. 3. Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.) and Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) outlasted Ryan Brown and Rosie Bird in the top flight, 9-7; and Kesli Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) defeated Devlin-Ann Ammendola and Stephanie Smyers, 9-7, at No. 3.
Bryant erased its deficit with wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 – leaving the final three matches to determine the match. Quinnipiac took the point at No. 4 singles where Oliphant defeated Briana Leonard in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4; and then earned its third point of the match with a 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-4 win at No. 1. Dzulynsky topped Marion Bouillon in that match. Unfortunately, Bryant prevailed at No. 5 to claim the non-conference victory.
