Women’s Tennis Falls to South Dakota State, 5-2, In Spring Break Opener

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team swept all three matches in doubles on Monday afternoon, but surrendered five out of the six points in singles in a 5-2 loss to South Dakota State in the team's annual Spring Break Trip to Orlando.

Quinnipiac (2-6) claimed three 8-4 decisions in the doubles segment, and carried the one-point lead into singles. Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.) and Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) teamed up to defeat Jenny Blackburne and Ffion Davies at No. 1; Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) knocked off Iasmin Rosa and Tacy Haws-Lay at No. 2; and reigning MAAC Player of the Week Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) topped Beatriz Souza and Flor Magni at No. 3.

However, momentum changed hands soon after as Quinnipiac's lead quickly diminished. South Dakota State claimed four points by way of straight set victories, surrendering just one match overall. Launie collected the Bobcats lone win with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Tacy Haws-Lay at No. 6.

Dzulynsky went toe-to-toe with Jackrabbits' ace Flor Magni, but fell in both tie-breaks. Dassa pushed her match to three sets but was forced to retire in the final frame.
