Women’s Tennis Drops 2014 Opener at Brown, 6-1
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After a long absence from competition, the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team returned to the courts on Sunday morning. Despite several encouraging performances, the Bobcats fell to Ivy League power Brown University, 6-1, at the Pizzitola Center in Providence, R.I.
With the loss, Quinnipiac dropped to 1-2 through its first three dual matches of the season. The hosting Bears picked up their first two wins of the season, following its win against Quinnipiac with a second triumph over Albany.
Using a new scoring format, Brown claimed the first point of the match in the doubles segment. The Bears collected wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to solidify the tally. Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) prevailed for the Bobcats at No. 3 though, defeating Victoria Traynor and Mariska Chamdani, 6-4.
Oliphant followed with a win at No. 6 singles to give the Bobcats their lone point. She defeated Olivia Hsu, 6-2, 6-4 to remain unbeaten on the day. Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) managed to push their matches to three sets, but couldn't quite pull off the upset. Young fell to Ammu Mandalap, 3-6, 6-0, 10-6, at No. 4 and Dassa fell to Ashley Noyes, 4-6, 6-1, 11-9, at No. 5. Brown earned each point at No. 1-3 in straight sets.
