Women’s Tennis Partakes in First Annual Vicki Soto 5K Run/Walk

STRATFORD, Conn. – As a testament to its commitment to community service, the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team took part in the first annual Vicki Soto 5K race on November 2, 2013 in Stratford, Conn. – an event held in remembrance of the lives lost during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

The First Annual Vicki Soto 5K was spearheaded by 'RunSignUp' and took place through the picturesque Lordship section of Stratford, Vicki's home town. In honor of Vicki's passion for education, the Vicki Soto Memorial Fund has been established. The monies raised for this fund will be used to support students that desire to go into the field of education. The goal is to continue Vicki's passion and help it grow in future educators.

Soto was a teacher who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012. After the gunman entered the school, Soto hid her students, then died trying to protect them, and has since been hailed as a hero. She is a posthumous recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal.

"We had a tremendous time at the Vicki Soto 5K race and were happy to be a part of such a wonderful event," said head coach Mike Quitko. "The Memorial Fund is a special way to honor Vicki Soto. She was a hero and is an inspiration to all of us."
