Women's Tennis Concludes Play at 2013 ITA Regionals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshmen Rachel Horton (Stamford, Conn.) and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) were back in action on Sunday evening, as the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Harvard University at the Murr Center in Cambridge, Mass.

"We had one of our best showings ever at this year's at ITA Regional," said head coach Mike Quitko. "We picked up multiple wins against the region's best players, and nearly put a doubles team into the quarterfinals. We're going to use the next few months to get healthy and then begin preparing for the 2014 spring season."

On Friday, Horton and Young picked up two wins in Main Draw Doubles to advance to the Round of 16. Unfortunately, their quest for an ITA Regional Title was cut short on Sunday when a pairing from Brown University – Hannah Camhi and Dayna Lord – handed the Bobcat duo an 8-4 loss. Camhi, a 2013 Ivy League First Teamer, and Lord advanced to the quarterfinals with the win.

Nonetheless, Horton and Young have gelled together nicely through the 2013 fall season. They are 14-3 overall when playing together and have combined for a total of 38 wins (singles and doubles).

Quinnipiac will resume play next year on Sunday, Jan. 26 at Brown. First serve is set for 10 a.m. at the Pizzitola Center in Providence, R.I.

The ITA Northeast Regional is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. Players are competing for an automatic entry into the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 7-10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Singles and doubles champions will receive a berth. More than 100 women's collegiate tennis players are competing at Harvard.
