HAMDEN, Conn. – The Bobcats women's tennis team will host the 17th annual Quinnipiac University Invitational this weekend, a three-day event set to begin on Friday, September 13, 2013 at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus. Joining the Bobcats on the courts this year will be Sacred Heart, UConn, Providence, Army, Navy, Seton Hall, Niagara and Hartford.
"We are once again really looking forward to hosting this event," said head coach Mike Quitko, who is entering his 23rd season at the helm of the program. "This year's competition features some of the best players in the region, including three teams out of the BIG EAST Conference and two teams out of the Patriot League – including the 2012 Patriot League Champs, Army. This will be a good early test for our team."
The Bobcats opened up play last weekend at the Sacred Heart Doubles Festival, and once again fared well in the annual tournament. Quinnipiac posted a combined 16-4 record on the afternoon and walked away with three of the four titles.
Quinnipiac will run five teams for doubles, featuring similar pairings from last week. Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Fla.); Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) and Rachel Horton (Stamford, Conn.); Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta); and Daniella Reyes (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and Nicole Keklik (Stratford, Conn.) will team up together for a second time this season. Quinnipiac also features the return of Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) who will partner with Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) for the final team.
Individually, look out for Raynor and Dassa who are both on pace to challenge Quinnipiac's all-time wins leader, Stephanie Petrycki '02 (165). Raynor picked up her 80th career win last weekend, whereas Dassa remains just 10 behind her with 70 career wins to her name. Add Chupa (67) and Launie (61) to the list and Quinnipiac totals four players with over 60 career wins entering this year's invitational.
The Quinnipiac Invitational begins at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Competition resumes the following day, Saturday, September 14, and then wraps up on Sunday, September 15. Play for the weekend begins at 9 a.m. on both days.
