Women’s Tennis Advances to NEC Championship with 4-2 win over LIU Brooklyn

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team earned a spot in the Northeast Conference Championship match, as the Bobcats defeated LIU Brooklyn, 4-2, Saturday morning at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. For the third year in a row, Quinnipiac will meet Fairleigh Dickinson in the finals which will take place tomorrow, Sunday, April 21 at 10 a.m.

Quinnipiac, now 14-10 overall, eliminated the third-seeded Blackbirds by virtue of the doubles point and three victories in singles competition. In the doubles segment, it was the tandem of Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) who solidified the point for the Bobcats. Chupa and Launie outlasted Nancy Zonneveld and Lisa Maas, 9-7, at No. 3 to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) were also triumphant in their match at No. 2 doubles.

In the individual portion of the match, LIU couldn't keep pace with Quinnipiac in the middle flights. Raynor topped Taysha Blessington, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2; Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) defeated Katya Yegoreychenko, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3; and Dassa cruised past Maas, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4.

Quinnipiac is 6-5 when playing in the championship match since 2000. Quinnipiac defeated FDU in the championship match in 2011, but fell in last year's final, 4-2. The Knights also edged the Bobcats in their lone meeting this year, 4-3, in Hamden.
