Women's Tennis Edged by BIG EAST's Providence, 4-3
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team went toe-to-toe with Providence College on Tuesday evening in a match that featured two third-set tie-breaks to determine the winner. After five hours of competitive, back-and-forth tennis, the Friars prevailed with a 4-3 victory at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus.
Quinnipiac garnered a 1-0 edge when the Bobcats captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) defeated Maria Clara Bernardez and Marisela Aviles-Duron, 9-7, at No. 1; and Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) solidified the point with an 8-5 victory at No. 2.
Providence avenged the doubles loss with two quick points in singles. The Friars took No. 5 and No. 6 singles in straight sets, but Quinnipiac's top two flights came through. Raynor defeated Bernardez at No. 2 and Cantor outlasted Aviles-Duron, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 1, putting the home team back on top, 3-2. However, those would be the last points for Quinnipiac, as Alana Prinos and Taylor Corder prevailed in third-set tie-breakers at No. 3 and No. 4.
