ORLANDO, Fla. - The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team nearly upended an Atlantic-10 opponent on Thursday night, but instead suffered a heartbreaking one-point loss, 4-3, to Fordham University at the Florida-Star Island Tennis Courts in Orlando, Fla. The final match of the night came down to a third set tie-break, which went in favor of Fordham, 11-9, for the final point and the victory.
With the loss, the Bobcats fell back to the .500 mark (5-5) and will head back to Connecticut for their next match on Sunday. The Rams improved to 4-5 on the season - a team that is coming off an A-10 Tournament bid and a 17-win campaign in 2011-12.
Quinnipiac opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two out of the three matches. After falling at No. 1, Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden, City, N.Y.) garnered a win at No. 2 with an 8-2 victory over Bella Genkina and Angelika Dabu. Quinnipiac's senior class leaders, Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.), bounced back from a rare defeat at doubles by earning points at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Cantor outlasted Amy Simidian, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7, at No. 1 and Viebrock cruised past Genkina, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3. The deciding point came at No. 4 singles, which saw Dassa and Debu come down to the wire in a thrilling three-set finish. Unfortunately, the ball bounced the right way for Debu, who came away with a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 win for the Rams victory.
