EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.), Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) each collected multiple wins on Wednesday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team avenged its first loss with an impressive 6-1 victory over BIG EAST foe UConn at the East Hartford Racquet Club.
"UConn is a very good team that we have not been able to defeat in the last few years," said head coach Mike Quitko, who inched closer to career win No. 500 (489). "This was quite an accomplishment to get back on the winning side. The last two matches that we have played, we have played really well. I'm very happy with our progress up and down the lineup."
Quinnipiac's top two doubles' pairings propelled the Bobcats to an early lead, as No. 1 and No. 2 claimed victories to earn the point. Cantor and Viebrock collected their 36th career victory together by defeating Lucy Nutting and Abby McKeon, 8-5; and Dassa and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) cruised past Maxene Weinberg and Srna Stosljevic, 8-1, for the second triumph. Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) played Jennifer Learmonth and Marie Gargiulo to a 6-6 deadlock before being deemed unfinished.
Quinnipiac vastly extended its 1-0 lead by earning five more points in singles competition. Cantor defeated Weinberg, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1; Viebrock picked up another win by defeating Nutting, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 10-4, at No. 3; Dassa topped McKeon, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 4; Chupa knocked off Natalie Robson, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 5; and Launie captured the sixth point with a three-set, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6), triumph over Gargiulo at No. 6.
