NEWARK, N.J. – Seniors Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) advanced to the semifinals of the doubles tournament on Friday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team took part in day one of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Invitational at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility Indoor Tennis Courts in Newark, N.J.
The bracket's top seed certainly showed why they were named #1, coasting into the semifinals with a pair of victories. After earning a first-round bye, Cantor and Viebrock defeated NJIT's Megan Guidry and Martina Tripcovici, 8-2, in the second round; and then topped Fairfield's Allison Radde and Nikki Jackson, 8-3, in the quarterfinals. Cantor and Viebrock will look for their 33rd career win together tomorrow morning when they take on Monika Graff and Hannelore MacDonald at 9 a.m.
Joining Cantor and Viebrock in the doubles segment were four other teams, three of which picked up wins in their first match. After a first-round bye, sophomores Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-3 win over Sacred Heart's Lindsey Post and Katie DeReinzo. Unfortunately, their tournament came to an end with a loss to Fairfield in the quarters.
In other action, junior Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) defeated Fairfield's Holly Ream and Emma Samson, 8-3, and senior Erin Suvar (North Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore Morgan Massey (Branford, Conn.) topped Fairfield's Margaret McLaughlin and Victoria Pirrello in thrilling fashion (9-8 (5) in the first round. However, both teams fell short in the second round.
Day one wrapped up with the first round of singles where the Bobcats once again fared well. After five wins and three byes, Quinnipiac will feature eight members in the second round. Cantor, Viebrock and Chupa all received byes, while Suvar, Launie, Dassa, Lavinia Cristescu (West Hartford, Conn.) and Nicole Keklik (Stratford, Conn.) posted opening-round wins to advance.
The NJIT Invitational continues tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
