HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) won the Flight "B" Doubles Championship on Saturday evening, as the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team competed in day two of the 16th annual QU Invite at the Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus. With the victory, Chupa and Launie improved to 5-0 in the 2012 fall season.

"I'm extremely pleased with our effort thus far, especially in doubles," said Head Coach Mike Quitko. "There are several very strong teams in this year's tournament and to come away with a victory says a lot about our team. Mary and Ariana are playing very well together and will only get better as the season continues."

Competition concluded with the Doubles Championships, where two Quinnipiac pairings took the court. Launie and Chupa collected their fourth straight win in Flight "B" Doubles, defeating UConn's  Lucy Nutting and Emilie Burgess, 8-0, for their first career tournament title.

Sophomores Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) also made a trek to the finals, however, couldn't overcome a twosome from Providence. Marisela Aviles and Maria Clara Bernardez outlasted the Bobcat duo, 8-6, to claim the trophy.

In singles competition, senior Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Erin Suvar (North Massapequa, N.Y.) advanced to the semifinals with triumphs in the first two rounds. In the bottom half of Flight "A", Cantor defeated Seton Hall's Rocio Portela, 6-4, 6-3, in the opening round and then knocked off UConn's Jennifer Learmonth in the quarterfinals. She will take on Aviles tomorrow morning in search for a trip to the championship match.

In the top half of Flight "D", Suvar defeated UConn's Sarah Griffin, 6-3, 6-1, in the opening round and then topped PC's Alli Carnall, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. She will take on Maria Rodriguez tomorrow morning in hopes of a trip to the championship match.

In other singles action, Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.), Dassa, Chupa, Lavinia Cristescu (West Hartford, Conn.) and Nicole Keklik (Stratford, Conn.) each collected victories in the opening round, but fell short in the quarterfinals.

Raynor and Launie won their brackets in consolation play as well. Raynor won three matches en route to a Consolation "A" triumph, while Launie needed two wins to earn the Flight "C" crown.

The 2012 Quinnipiac University Invitational continues tomorrow morning at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
