Women's Tennis Places Two Groups In Quinnipiac Invitational Doubles Championships

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team fared well in the opening day of the 2012 QU Invitational on Friday afternoon, as the Bobcats advanced two pairings to championship matches at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts. Sophomores Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.Y.) advanced to the finals of Flight "A" Doubles, while Mary Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) and Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) moved on into the finals of Flight "B" Doubles.   

In the bottom half of Flight "A", Raynor and Dassa won three straight matches en route to a spot in the championship. Dassa and Raynor defeated Providence's Hannah Zangari and Karen Ramirez, 8-0, in the first round, Seton Hall's Chloe Sher and Rocio Portela, 8-1, in the quarterfinals and Jennifer Learmonth and Maxene Weinberg of UConn, 8-5, in the semifinals. Dassa and Raynor remain undefeated for the season and will take on Marisela Aviles and Maria Clara Bernardez for the crown tomorrow.

In the top half of the bracket, seniors Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) and Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) advanced to the semifinals before falling short to Aviles and Bernardez. Viebrock and Cantor earned a bye in the first round, topped PC's Taylor Corder and Alana Prinos, 8-2, and then dropped their first match of the season in a heartbreaker, 9-8 (8).

In bottom half of Flight "B" Doubles, Chupa and Launie cruised to the finals winning each of their match-ups in dominating fashion. The Bobcat duo defeated PC's Taylor Ahlborn and Katherine Ripple, 8-0, in the first round, Sacred Heart's Lindsey Post and Alyssa Migliorini, 8-1, in the quarterfinals and UConn's Natalie Robson and Julia Allen, 8-4, in the semifinals. Chupa and Launie will face off against another UConn pairing, Lucy Nutting and Emile Burgess, tomorrow in the finals.

In the top half of the bracket, Lavinia Cristescu (West Hartford, Conn.) and Nicole Keklik (Stratford, Conn.) picked up their first win of the fall season. They knocked off an inter-squad team of Lauren Rodrigues (SHU) and QU's Morgan Massey (Branford, Conn.), 8-2, in the opening round. In the quarterfinals however, Cristescu and Keklik fell short to Nutting and Burgess, 8-2.

The 2012 Quinnipiac University Invitational continues tomorrow morning at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
