Freshmen Lead Women's Tennis On Second Day Of Eastern Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Quinnipiac freshmen Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) advanced to the "A" Doubles Championship at the Eastern Championships hosted by the United State Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Dassa and Raynor will play for the championship on Sunday, Sept. 25.

Dassa and Raynor won twice on Saturday to advance to Sunday's championship. The duo defeated Pitt's Kimmy Borza and Molly Wickman, 8-5, before defeating Bowdoin's Chantelle Laveito and Emma Lewis, 8-6. Dassa and Raynor will face Fordham's Sarah Ali and Bella Genkina on Sunday.

In the "B" Doubles, Morgan Crystal (Ridgefield, Conn.) and freshman Morgan Massey (Branford, Conn.) lost in the first round on Friday, but advanced to the consolation finals on Saturday. Crystal and Massey defeated Sacred Heart's Haley Dubits and Kristin Legenza, 8-6, to set up a finals match-up against Army's Alyssa Gleason and Maya Parker.

In the "B" Singles, Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) lost to Stony Brook's Prerana Appineni, 6-4, 6-2, in the flight's quarterfinals. Cantor was then seeded in the "Desire" Singles, for A and B flight winners who won their first two matches, but lost their third. Cantor advanced to the Quarterfinals of that bracket with wins against Bowdoin's Kellen Albeiston and Providence's Marisela Aviles. Cantor will play the winner of the match between Army's Emily Stein and Irina Dementyeva.

In the "C" Singles, Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) defeated UConn's Marie Gargiulo, 6-1, 7-6 (6), to advance to the flight's semifinal match-up against UMass' Chanel Gasper. Gasper was victorious, 6-1, 6-3.

In the "Duty" Singles, for players in the C and D flights who won their first match and lost their second, Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) moved to the quarterfinals after a first-round bye where she defeated Providence's Taylor Corder, 8-5. Launie will face Fairleigh Dickinson's Egzona Morina in the bracket's semifinals on Sunday.
