Cantor, Viebrock Advance To Eastern Championships Singles Quarterfinals On Tourney's First Day
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Quinnipiac juniors Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) both advanced to the Quarterfinals of their respective singles' flights on the first day of the Eastern Championships hosted by the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
While the tournament started outdoors, rain started prior to the second round of singles, moving matches inside where pro set scoring was used, meaning the opponents played one set, instead of the best-of-three format, with the first to win eight games wins.
In the Singles "B" Flight, Cantor defeated Hofstra's Bianca Derrick (6-3, 6-1) to advance to the Round of 16 where she faced Pitt's Gabrielle Catanzariti, who received a first-round bye. Cantor dispatched Catanzariti (8-1). Cantor will face Stony Brook's Prerena Appineni in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
In the Singles "C" Flight, Viebrock moved to the Round of 16 with a first-round bye to face Fairleigh Dickinson's Egzona Morina. Morina, playing in her second match of the day, took Viebrock down to the wire before the Bobcats' junior emerged victorious (8-6). Viebrock will face UConn's Marie Gargiulo, who defeated Pitt's Amanda Wickman in a tiebreaker.
In the Doubles "A" Flight, freshman Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) defeated Sacred Heart's Delaney Downing and Maggie Tooley (8-1) to advance to the quarterfinals. Dassa and Raynor will face Pitt's Kimmy Borza and Molly Wickman.
Freshman Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) defeated Hofstra's Paige Polizois in the first round of the Singles "D" Flight (6-2, 6-1) before falling to Bryant's Marcela Brandao (9-7).
Junior Morgan Crystal (Ridgefield, Conn.) and freshman Morgan Massey (Branford, Conn.) lost in the first round of the Doubles "B" Flight to Albany's Aubrey Brooks and Sarah Iannone. Lavinia Cristescu (West Hartford, Conn.) and Erin Suvar (North Massapequa, N.Y.) also lost in the "B" Flight (8-5) to Providence's Ali Carnall and Elisabetta Dewitt. Both pairs will play in the consolation round tomorrow.
Play will resume on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 9 a.m. at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center on the West Point campus of the U.S. Military Academy.
